EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
